Cotton has affected lives in a variety of ways throughout centuries.
It’s legacy felt yet today.
The seeming elegance of soft, fluffy white cotton bolls has intrigued me since moving to the South. Maybe growing up around Midwest corn fields has had something to do with this fascination. Or maybe it’s the various connotations and sentiments visualized and experienced by individuals, positive and negative.
Whatever the reason, capturing the essence of cotton in the field and under scrutiny in my light tent a focus for several years now. Never quite satisfied yet with images but continually pursuing to that end.
As mentioned in last week’s publication, Out N’ About with a Friend, the 130-mile discovery day trip was interspersed with several cotton photography stops. As you can see, one in particular caught our attention late afternoon.
Examples from light tent photo sessions

Very nice images.
YEARS BACK WHEN VICKI AND I WERE IN NEBRASKA WORKING (GRAND ISLAND) …HER DAD CAME TO VISIT LATE ONE FALL. I ASKED HIM TO STOP ALONG THE WAY A CUT ME A BRANCH OFF A COTTON STALK SO I COULD STAVE- OFF PANGS OF HOME SICKNESS FOR MEMPHIS AND THE SOUTH. HE BROUGH A FULL SIZE PLANT, PULLED OUT OF THE GROUND, AND FULL OF OPEN BOWLS. I PUT IT IN MY OFFICE AND EVERTIME SOMEONE PASSED, THEY WOULD COMMENT, ” WHAT KIND OF TREE IS THAT?”

NICE, NICE, CHERYL
Thanks for capturing cotton with your camera. I even educated myself by finding out more about the word boll (seed pod) To see a cotton bail was amazing and your tent images of the cotton captivated me. I wonder if anyone has blogged about corn here in the midwest?
Cheryl, this was a great nostalgia post for me. As a child I picked cotton so I could go to the Mid-South Fair. Then, my husband and I would take a trip to Greenville every fall to see the cotton pickers at work. Sometimes there were even people out there picking. Thanks!
Enjoyed! 🙂
The pictures are awesome. I’ve never lived in an area where cotton is grown, and it’s fun to see what cotton looks like up close.
